Ophthalmology referrals for pets

MBM Veterinary Group offer an ophthalmology referral service from their Kilmarnock branch 5 days a week. The service is provided by Jamie Bell, an RCVS Accredited Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Ophthalmology.

The service offers comprehensive referral consultations to owners and their pets throughout Scotland. Initial consultations are 30minutes long, during which a full ophthalmic examination will be performed. We have a range of diagnostic equipment for ophthalmic examination, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy and tonometry. Following the examination any findings will be explained to the owner, in addition to any further investigations or necessary treatment.

We commonly manage

  • Deep corneal ulcers – conjunctival pedicle graft or corneal lamellar graft
  • Superficial non healing ulcers (SCCEDs)
  • Entropion and facelift surgery
  • Distichiasis
  • Cataracts – phacoemulsification with intraocular lens placement
  • Eyelid mass excision
  • Ectopic cilium
  • Eyelid reconstruction
  • Corneal foreign bodies
  • Corneal sequestrum in cats
  • Traumatic corneal and intraocular injuries
  • Lens luxation
  • Cherry eye
  • Parotid duct transposition for end stage dry eye
  • Uveitis
  • Glaucoma

Cataract Surgery (Phacoemulsification)

We recommend early referral for all cataract assessments, even if the patient continues to remain visual. Phacoemulsification is the gold standard procedure for cataract removal. At the initial consultation we assess the suitability of the patient and discuss the procedure with the owner.

Most surgical cases are performed as day procedures, with pets allowed to go home by 5/6pm.

Cases can only be seen at MBM Ophthalmology service after receiving a referral from an owners first opinion vet.

We aim to see urgent cases within 24-72hours. A same day referral service is available for emergencies (see below)

Emergency consultations can be arranged by phoning reception on: 01563 522701

Urgent/Routine cases can be arranged by emailing: kilmarnockreception@mbmvetgroup.co.uk

Please be aware that if an owner has been referred to MBM Vets for specialised treatment of your pet’s ocular condition, they may not register their pet with MBM Vets for general veterinary services, and they will need to return to their own vets for the treatment of any other unrelated conditions and for routine vaccination and worming etc.
