Jim was brought up on a working dairy farm in Ayrshire and qualified from Glasgow Vet School in 1995. His first year after graduation was spent working in mixed practice in Cumbria, where his farming knowledge stood him in good stead and he very rapidly honed his large animal surgical skills! Moving ‘back home’ to Ayrshire in the autumn of 1996, he began work at Barr and MacMillan (as the practice was then known). He continued to work with farm and small animal clients and within a short time he was invited to become a partner, an offer he eagerly accepted. Over the years, the practice developed and grew, and Jim found his time spent more and more ‘indoors’ rather than out.
He was able to pursue his interest in small animal soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery and is now one of MBM’s most skilled and experienced surgeons, successfully tackling many procedures that other first opinion vets would not.
In his spare time, Jim enjoys spending time with his family, mountain biking with Bella the Labrador (a.k.a. his personal trainer), painting, travelling and rollercoasters.
